"If it's God's will that Liberace and I get married, then we will. I'm leaving everything in God's hands."
Joanne Rio was the only woman Liberace was engaged to. A dancer at the Moulin Rouge nightclub in Hollywood, she lived down the street from Liberace North Hollywood home. The engagement met with a great deal of resistance from both sides. Joanne's father was not too happy and neither were Liberace's lady fans. He received 6,000 letters of protest after the announcement. The engagement was soon called off. I read that Joanne's father heard a little story about Lee and decided the marriage might not be the best idea. I'd love to hear that story! Liberace was also seen escorting Betty White, Leslie carol, Mamie Van Dorn and Sonya Hennie, but these were viewed as publicity dates.
